Interview with Anne Rice

I thoroughly enjoyed The Vampire Chronicles as well as The Lasher books that Anne Rice wrote early in her career. I was unaware that she has stated she will not be writing any more fiction and that she is devoting all her writing to her new-found religion.

There is an interview here on a site that I use to track much of my reading with others, called GoodReads. I am happy to report that I have found a reading group right here in Maxwell Park and we will be meeting for my first time this week.

Post Halloween Sugar Crash

michael myersSometime in the night the candy stopped having its effect on me and I just crashed hard. We were supposed to have handed out all that candy, as well as serving our frosted cookies to our guests, but the rain kept the kids to a minimum and our guests seemed to be happy to sip their cocktails, visit, hand out candy to the few intrepid water rats that arrived.

Later in the evening, we all sat and watched the perennial classic, Halloween, with Jamie Lee Curtis in her breakout role.jamie lee curtisThe movie still stands as a movie that all other horror flicks emulate. Watching the special features, we were enthralled to find out a few things:

  • the mask that Michael Myers (The Shape) wears was a Captain Kirk mask
  • the movie was made for $300,000… and made over $50 Million (good investment)
  • Donald Pleasance was the highest paid actor on the movie ($20,000)
  • Jamie Lee Curtis went on to have a great career
  • P.J. Soles’ career went downhillpj soles

I highly recommend the movie and hope you all get a chance to see it. Maybe OnDemand or Netflix.

Pandora on Your Desktop

I have been a huge fan of Pandora for a long time and am looking forward to the upcoming Pandora Party at the San Francisco Apple store. September 18, 2008. The ones in Oakland have been alot of fun.

Additionally, I just downloaded the new desktop application from http://www.pandora.com/desktop. I am really happy with it, especially considering that it is a Beta version.

Now I can take Pandora off my homepage tabs. I can access Pandora without even opening up an additional internet connection. Also, on my Mac, I can access everything (including making new stations) right from the dock. I would assume that windows users will have similar controls. Pandora originally decided they wanted to be web based (as opposed to desktop) for several reasons. They felt that iTunes, Rhapsody and other providers were already saturating the market with applications and they wanted to do something different. additionally, they felt that having users be ale to post a link (see my Pandora stations in the sidebar) where people can click on it and there would be no additional download required. You can listen straight from the web.

This application departs from that, but the power of the AIR platform and the relative small size of these downloads makes it a small price to pay for having the flexibility that a desktop app can provide.

Now if only the iPhone Pandora application could run without having to stay in Safari the whole time (when listening to Pandora, users cannot access other applications).
